got love? send it to arizona.

Breast-cancer-ribbon I am not religious, but I believe in love and I believe that it can't hurt to have a whole crapload of people sending love to my aunt today. As mentioned, she was diagnosed with fucking breast cancer a few weeks ago and is having surgery today. At 1pm Mountain Standard Time, please send your very best light toward AZ.

(Did you know that Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings? Really messed with my head when I moved to California as a teen. It can be confusing to figure out the time in Arizona since the rest of us move around in time and they do not. To find out the time in Phoenix, go here.)

To add an amusing (?) twist, ours might be the only family where my aunt was able to consult with my husband to discuss the experience of a double mastectomy.

And to brag a bit about our awesomeness and to show how very little trans-crap comes into play in our daily life, each member of our extended family, INCLUDING ME, started to say to Wes, "Why would she call YOU to ask about that?" Wait for it, wait for it… "OH!" Yes. It takes a good 30 seconds for us to remember events that are a mere 9 years in the past. Whether that speaks to our deep acceptance of Wes' gender or our dwindling, fading brain power… well, I am going to just go with the former.

My MIL was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago, and she too is having surgery today. Prayers up for both of them and all of the other brave women (and men!) who are fighting the fight.

I’m participating in the breast cancer walk in Orlando on 10/31. Your aunt will be in my thoughts. I’ll keep her in my prayers.

Thank you all, so so much for the good wishes. I’m doing better than I expected. Stiff and sore around the neck and shoulders, but getting around pretty well. Worst part is getting in and out of bed, so I’m sleeping odd hours. Mostly hanging out watching TV and eating. My dear sister Nanci is taking very good care of me. I am so blessed. I loved talking w/Wes prior to surgery! Who else can say they discussed a double mastectomy w/their niece’s husband?! LOL.

I know I’m late, but I still wanted to wish your aunt good thoughts for the recovery–both physically and emotionally.

Thinking of your aunt. Also, if you want to cheer her up, I suggest the book “Lopsided: How Having Breast Cancer Can Be Really Distracting,” by Meredith Norton. It is a memoir about her time with breast cancer that manages to be funny and true and never hackneyed or cornily sentimental.
