more ipod therapy
Posted: August 29, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized 3 Comments »As the week went on, I noticed that I was dialing up one particular singer on my ipod – the esteemed Ms. Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. Something about her delicate voice snarling in bitterness just gets me going in the morning. You might remember (or not) that her song, "The Good That Won’t Come Out" was my Infertile Anthem, the one that I could shout and cry to. Still brings me right back to those months the period came when it was least desired. Anyway, because I listened to that song so, so, so, so much, I only gave the rest of the album a cursory listen. So this week, when I don’t need that Mountain Goats song, I am focusing on Jenny and Rilo Kiley.
This is the Going Back to Work Anthem, entitled "A Better Daughter/Son" – I would have liked there to be a video but they are all live and the audience is singing so loudly along with her that you can’t get the effect of her snarly bitterness full on. There is on youtube clip with the recorded version but it goes with some crazy Japanimation stuff that I can’t bring myself to publish. Fine. I ‘ll link it. Go seek out this song, especially if you like anger and songs that build. And singers who can make italics with their voices (does anyone know what I mean?). Here’s my favorite bit:
And sometimes when you’re on
You’re really fucking on
And your friends they sing along
And they love you
But the lows are so extreme
That the good seems fucking cheap
And it teases you for weeks in its absence
But you’ll fight and you’ll make it through
You’ll fake it if you have to
And you’ll show up for work with a smile
And you’ll be better
You’ll be smarter
More grown up and a better daughter or son
And a real good friend
And you’ll be awake
You’ll be alert
You’ll be positive though it hurts
And you’ll laugh and embrace all of your friends
And you’ll be a real good listener
You’ll be honest
You’ll be brave
You’ll be handsome and you’ll be beautiful
You’ll be happy
And yet again, I thank listmaker for giving me both the Rilo Kiley album and the Jenny Lewis one.
